Vocal Music Department ends the year on a HIGH!!!!!

On Saturday, April 30, the Northwest Middle School Concert Choir travelled to World’s of Fun to compete in a national Festival of Music. They were one of many choirs from all over the United States that performed for three judges on that day. They received a II rating which is considered to be excellent. I am very proud of them and their performances this year. Congratulations Concert Choir for your great and hard work this year. You’re the TOP!!!!!

I also want to say that I have enjoyed being the vocal music teacher at Northwest Middle School for the past seven years. I couldn’t have picked a better school for me to have my first official teaching experience. You have filled my life with joy and musical completion. I will miss working with each of you, staff and students. You are a great bunch of people and will forever be affected by your presence in my life. Northwest has a great future ahead of them and WILL be the top performing middle school in the Kansas City Kansas School District. I wish you the best success!

Forever a TIGER!

Tigers Setting Up for the Buffalos

February 14th, 2011 by · Comments Off · Sports

The 7th grade team broke out of the funk on Thursday against Central as they played solid defense and won 17-8. Emmanuel Browne was the teams leading scorer as he ran up and down the floor scoring fast break bucket after fast break bucket. He ended up with 8 points. Zach Cahill followed him up with 4 points. This 7th grade team has shown great growth, as a lot of the players are first year guys. We look forward to seeing them continue to improve upon their game!

8th Grade pushes the win streak to 4 and  secured a winning record Thursday defeating Central 56-17! The Tigers have continued to grow in every facet of their game. They played great team defense recording 12 steals and blocking 6 shots.  Kendall Dale was all over the court. He scored 18 points, had 5 steals, and 5 assist. Sexton Kirby showed up once again hitting big shots throughout the game, and Anthony Davis chimed in with 2 three pointers. All of the Tigers impacted the game in their own way as Raekwon Shelton showed up with some huge rebounds and 6 points.  Erice Mccollum scored 4 points and had a big steal which led to an easy fast break lay-up. Jeffrice Wilson also exploded grabbing 3 rebounds and hitting a huge 4th quarter lay-up. Damian Reed did a lot of the dirty work grabbing rebounds and making great passes.

This win sets up a #1 vs. #2 match up on Monday as the Northwest Tigers welcome the undefeated West Buffalos into the “Jungle”!  The 8th grade Tigers team record is 5-1 and this is the biggest game of the middle school season. Northwest students will be able to get into this game by using ARK NOTES, so come out and support your Tigers and show your TIGER PRIDE!!!

Tigers Stretch to pull the Eagles Down

February 8th, 2011 by · Comments Off · Sports

The 7th and 8th grade basketball teams played Eisenhower in a set of exciting games.  The 7th grade team has had some highs and some lows. They’ve blown some teams out and lost some nail biters. Last night was a learning experience as they lost they’re third game of the year. “They do a great job on the boards, but they need to secure the ball, and make sound decisions.” They have had and will in the future see better days!

8th grade Revival!    “I’ve been a Tiger for three years now, and I’ve never seen our kids fight and believe in themselves like they did last night.”

Though this team has shown that they know how to put it all together, they often start out slow. Last night was no exception as the Eagles jumped out to an early 11-2 lead. “We were looking really shaky so I called a timeout to talk to the guys a bit and calm them down,” comments Coach Smith.  Coming out of the timeout the defense got better but the offense was still lack luster as the Tigers went into half time down 16-8. After the break, Northwest came out in a whole new frame of mind. The defense held tight while the offense started clicking. The 9th grade team scored 12 points in the 3rd quarter while holding them to 4 and went into the 4th quarter tied. The forth quarter was a back and forth battle. With both teams refusing to lose and extra period would be needed to decide a victor.

The game was tied 28-28 going into overtime. With evenly matched teams character would be the deciding factor in this game. With the score tied at 30 a piece one of Eisenhower’s players got so frustrated with our defense that he slammed the ball after being called for a travel resulting in a technical foul with two seconds left in overtime. Coach Smith ran down his bench slapping hands saying, “That’s why we teach character!!!” When asked who would shoot the two free throws Kendall Dale spoke up and said, “Let me shoot ‘em, Coach?”. “I trust you. Go ahead.” said Coach Smith.  Kendall Dale went to the line with the weight of the world on his shoulders and hit both free throws to give the Tigers a 32-30 lead. Eisenhower flung one more last second heave up the court but it was to no avail as it air balled out of bounds, and the Tigers completed a great comeback on the road to push their record 4-1!

William Jefferson dominated the post scoring 16 points, and grabbing 15 rebounds. Kendall Dale scored 8 points, Todd Kennedy and Anthony Davis had 2 points a piece, and Sexton Kirby hit a huge 3 pointer and a free throw to score 4 points.

Our mighty tigers had a few more games ahead.  The team plays Central on Thursday here at home.  Next Monday, February 14, Northwest hosts West in a much anticipated battle between two solid teams.  You won’t want to miss out.   Student tickets are $2 and the games start at 3:30.  See you there.

Energy, Effort, and Enthusiasm…an Excellent Combination

January 28th, 2011 by · Comments Off · Sports, Uncategorized

Arrowhead – Northwest game run down by Coach Smith:

The 7th grade fought it out with the Apaches tooth and nail. They played great defense and boxed out really well grabbing rebound after rebound. But in the end the Apaches pulled out a close one giving the 7th grade their second loss of the season. The Tigers showed a lot of fight in the 11-13 loss.

The 8th grade game was absolutely BONKERS!!!

“I love playing Arrowhead at their house. Their fans are so enthusiastic and they really affect the energy of the game.” Just like in wrestling season the Tigers went in to the undefeated Apache house and came out with a crowd silencing victory.  Tonight it wasn’t too quiet because there were just as many Tiger fans as there were Apache fans, and “The Traveling Tigers” energy in the 2nd half took the game to an epic height.

William Jefferson led the way in points coming up with a monster 7 point fourth quarter recording 18 rebounds, and scoring 11 points in the game. The Tiger guards showed up ready to play as well, with both Sexton Kirby and Kendall Dale scoring 7 points, while Todd followed them up with 6 points. All the Tigers stepped up when called upon to help the Tigers pullout a close road victory winning 34-30. “As a coach I was extremely proud of this team. The way they fought through adversity to conquer a tough road shows that they don’t just play for themselves, but they play for their teammates and this school!”

Okay, Tiger fans.  Don’t forget to come out to support our guys at the Northwest- West home games in the gymnasim Tuesday at 3:30.   Student tickets are $2.   Some of the Tiger ball players have already acknowledged to this reporter that this West team is solid and they are looking forward to the battle.

Election Results for Northwest Student Council

January 28th, 2011 by · Comments Off · Feature

With support from the Media Club,  Student Council recorded speeches of the 8th grade candidates for Stuco president, vice president and secretary and treasurer.    Students watched the elections on Wednesday afternoon with the regular Media Club news production.   Nervous students recorded their reasons for why they should be the leadesrs of our student body organization.   And the new elected officials are…..

President Todd Kennedy, Vice President Sharee Robinson, Secretary Brian Hall and Treasurer Sexton Kirby.

The Student Council, sponsored by Ms. Freeman, has plenty of plans for NW.  Most notably, they are focused on turning the courtyard into a student-friendly lunch spot , sponsoring a student dance, and hosting a pre-test pep rally.

Congratulations to our representatives and thanks to all who participated.   That is what the process is about.

The Tigers Pounce on the Colts

January 27th, 2011 by · Comments Off · Sports

Tuesday game rundown according to 8th grade Head Coach Smith:

“The 7th grade team looked impressive with their revamped offense.  They played aggressive defense and attacked the boards.  Ladarius Jennings, Kendrick Jackson, and Elgin Hood led the way in rebounds, acting as if every missed basket belonged in their hands.  Emmanuel Browne showed why he was apart of the undefeated 2010 Northwest cross country team running up and down the court for basket after basket. He was the leading scorer with 12 points. Ladarius Jennings chimed in with 8 points, and Zach Cahill added 6 points and a handful of assist.”  The result was a hardy 30-15 win over the Colts.

I promised that we would look better once we got back home. The 8th grade team showed tremendous improvement. They scored a season high 50 points while holding the Coronado Colts to 28 points. Kendall Dale and Todd Kennedy led scoring both scoring 12 points, while William jefferson scored 9 points and had a few huge blocks.  Raekwon Shelton, Markeise Hall, and William Jefferson showed some great improvement in their rebounding. All of the Tigers came to play though with great ball movement and bench play.”

In addition to Coach Smith’s thoughts, let me say that the Tiger fans are coming out in force.   The team was supported by a large number of parents, students and staff all well led by our enthusiastic cheer squad and pep club members.  If you weren’t there, don’t miss another game.   The team will be at Arrowhead this Thursday.    Next Tuesday, according to an inside source at West Middle School, the West teams plan to come into the home of the Tigers and give them a run.   Let’s all turn out to support our Tigers to a couple more home court victories against West.
